Forbes Tech Council: How To Outwit Malicious AI

As artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, so too does the threat landscape of phishing and digital scams. It’s a development I recently explored in my Forbes Tech Council article. Historically, phishing emails were easy to spot: riddled with typos and obvious mistakes, their success rate rarely topped 1%. Now, thanks to AI-powered tools, phishing has become sophisticated, with success rates surging to a worrying 54%. These new attacks are more intelligent, hyper-personalized, and emotionally manipulative.

AI enables scammers to generate thousands of convincing emails that closely mimic industry language and appear to be from genuine contacts. A message supposedly from a trusted buyer or even your boss looks authentic enough to fool even the most experienced professionals. Worse, these attacks aren’t limited to emails: they creep into our SMS inboxes, phone calls, and even AI-generated video meetings.

Unfortunately, most companies are still fighting yesterday’s battles. Outdated spam filters and simplistic employee training leave us vulnerable to security threats. Our response must adapt—starting with psychological awareness. Employees cannot be expected to withstand a constant barrage of near-perfect scam attempts, especially when pressured by urgency and multitasking.

To outsmart malicious AI, we need multilayered defenses: stronger email server security, mandatory cryptographic signatures, enforcing the use of corporate devices, dual authentication for sensitive transactions, and role-specific access controls. Most importantly, training must be relevant, realistic, and ongoing, and leveraging microlearning and real-world scenarios to keep everyone vigilant.

The surge in AI-driven scams is just beginning. Only by combining innovative technology, human insight, and collaborative effort can we preserve trust in our digital communications and stay a step ahead of cybercriminals.
