Emotions are the original zero-day vulnerability in cybersecurity. Long before AI models and deepfake generators arrived, scammers understood something every good salesperson also knows: people do not make decisions rationally and then justify them emotionally. Instead, we do the opposite. What has changed is not the weakness, but the tooling. Where yesterday’s scammer had to improvise on the phone, today’s attacker can automate empathy, scale flattery, and weaponize urgency with a synthetic human face. Nowhere is this clearer than in the wave of North Korean job scams that have quietly turned our hunger for meaningful work into a reliable means of penetrating organizations and exfiltrating value.

When Your Brain Runs Hotter Than Your Firewall

In cybersecurity, we like to talk about hardening systems and patching vulnerabilities, but we rarely admit that the system most frequently exploited is the one between our ears. Emotions are the CPU spikes of human decision-making: when you are afraid, hopeful, flattered, or rushed, your brain overclocks and your safeguards throttle back. You stop asking, “Does this make sense?” and start asking, “What if this is my chance?”

Scammers explicitly exploit this reaction and design scams to trigger those emotional spikes. A too-good-to-be-true role that perfectly matches your CV, a recruiter who “found your profile impressive,” and an interview invitation that lands just after you got laid off are all elements that are an emotional API call. Hope suppresses skepticism. Scarcity, found in quick calls to action like: “We’re moving quickly, can you install this assessment tool today?” creates urgency that bypasses cautious review. Flattery switches off the instinct to verify identities or cross-check domains.

AI amplifies this by enabling scammers to be consistent, patient, and tireless in their emotional manipulation. A human con artist might lose interest if you hesitate. A model will happily rephrase the same lure twenty different ways, adapting to your tone and language until it finds the one that lands. The attack no longer depends on a brilliant criminal improv actor. Instead, it depends on the training data and computing resources. The result is a predator that never gets bored and never takes a day off.

The New Job Interview: A Cybersecurity Breach

The recent North Korea–linked job scams show how far this convergence of emotion and AI has gone. In one campaign uncovered by Fireblocks, attackers impersonated legitimate recruiters, mimicking the company’s real hiring process almost step by step. They approached candidates through familiar channels, scheduled Google Meet interviews, and sent out technical “assignments” via GitHub. The only real difference was that, buried inside the assignment, was malware designed to compromise the candidate’s wallets, keys, and operating system.

From the victim’s perspective, everything felt right. The job matched their skills, the process aligned with what reputable tech firms do, and the recruiters were responsive and professional. Emotionally, this hits all the right notes: validation of your expertise, the promise of career progression, and the positive friction of moving through a well-structured selection process. That emotional momentum is exactly what the attacker counts on when they ask you to “just run this installer so we can evaluate your environment.”​

These are not isolated one-off stunts. Axios has reported that North Korea has built a de facto IT labor army, using stolen identities to infiltrate companies across the globe. Coordinated teams in China, Russia, and other countries identify identities to hijack, forge documents, and apply for software development and DevOps roles via platforms like LinkedIn, traditional job sites, and even through project-oriented sites like Upwork and Fiver. The FBI and employment law experts have warned that these North Korean workers rely on U.S.-based collaborators to provide internet access, receive hardware, and front as nominal business owners. The emotional lever here is not only the candidate’s desire for a job, but the employer’s desire to fill hard-to-hire roles quickly in a competitive market.

Cybersecurity and Trust between Deepfakes and Avatars

For years, we told ourselves that “seeing is believing.” Video calls and face-to-face meetings were considered higher-trust channels than email. The emergence of deepfake-powered job interviews shatters that assumption. Interviewers have described candidates whose eyes didn’t quite track, whose lips and voice were slightly out of sync, and whose responses felt strangely mechanical. All signs of your counterpart using a digital mask. Yet, as technology improves and we accept softeners and virtual backgrounds, these signs become harder to detect.

Trust, again, is an emotional state before it is a technical one. When you see a “person” looking at you through a webcam, responding in real time, answering technical questions with apparent fluency, your brain relaxes. You unconsciously downgrade the risk assessment because “surely a scammer wouldn’t go this far.” Thus, the avatar becomes a shortcut. If someone invested this much effort, they must be legitimate. AI thrives on that shortcut. Deep learning models can generate faces and voices. It can tailor stories and backgrounds to your cultural expectations of professionalism, right down to the bookshelf behind the candidate or the accent that signals “local enough” to pass.

North Korean operations have already used deepfakes to mask their applicants’ real identities and locations, in particular, when applying for remote IT positions that provide access to sensitive systems. Combined with fake websites and fabricated corporate histories, they create a coherent illusion that feels more credible than many real small businesses. The goal is to lull your emotions into cooperation. If you feel comfortable, you ask fewer questions. If you feel behind on hiring, you override your discomfort. These scams work because they align their emotional script with your operational pain points.

Cybersecurity Cannot Firewall Feelings, But You Can Train Them

The uncomfortable truth is that we will never fully remove human emotion from the loop, nor should we want to. Our hopes and ambitions drive us to new heights and make us care about our work. The task is not to suppress emotions but to route them through better habits. In the context of AI-powered scams, that means building a culture where emotional spikes are cues to slow down, not speed up.

The North Korean job scams highlight the need for organizations to rethink hiring as part of their security posture. More stringent verification in recruitment, including robust identity checks, careful evaluation of inconsistencies during video interviews, and scrutiny of remote access patterns, might help. Yet, none of that matters if the people using these checklists feel pressured to ignore them because “we must fill this role this quarter.”

For individuals, the lesson is just as direct. If an opportunity speaks to your deepest fears or hopes, that might be the time to insist on methodical verifications. “If I don’t get that job, I might run out of food” is something you might think. However, it shouldn’t be an argument from a recruiter.

Simple steps like looking up the recruiter on independent channels, verifying domains, being suspicious of any process that asks you to install software, and treating assignments that require elevated access as privileged operations. Unlike AI, you do not have infinite attention, so turn skepticism into a habit rather than a heroic exception.

The future of scams will not look like cartoon villains sending misspelled emails from free accounts. It will look like well-produced interview loops, polished websites, and articulate “colleagues” on video calls, many of them backed by nation-states that view your emotions as exploitable infrastructure. The organizations that fare best will be those that treat emotional awareness as seriously as endpoint protection, and the professionals who thrive will be those who learn to notice when their feelings are being engineered.
