Forbes Tech Council: Digital Sovereignty In 2025

In my article, “Digital Sovereignty In 2025: The New Frontier Of Tech Independence,” I examine how digital sovereignty has emerged as a vital response to the political upheaval and technological disruptions of 2025. To me, digital sovereignty means the ability of nations and organizations to govern their data, software, and IT infrastructure independently, and without foreign control or influence. I share observations from North America and Europe, noting that in Canada, most IT leaders now require local data storage to meet compliance and security requirements. At the same time, in the U.S., skepticism toward large tech companies fuels demands for greater autonomy.

I highlight how global regulations are evolving rapidly in tandem with AI advancements, with the European Union taking a leading role through legislation such as the Digital Markets Act and the Artificial Intelligence Act. These frameworks aren’t about over-regulating but about encouraging domestic innovation and protecting user rights. However, I emphasize that technological isolationism is neither feasible nor desirable given our interconnected digital economy. Instead, I advocate for interoperable systems that uphold sovereignty while fostering innovation and economic growth.

In the article, I also discuss the crucial role of open-source software and open APIs in achieving digital sovereignty, as they provide transparent control, reduce vendor lock-in, and support the development of homegrown technology. Ultimately, I urge readers to strike a thoughtful balance between sovereignty, collaboration, and innovation because the decisions we make today will shape a more secure, resilient, and inclusive digital future.
